Start your day right

Getting the best out of your day and making the most of each new day begins with starting the day right. What you do in the first hour of the new day is the key element for how well your day turns out. So, how can you start your day right?

Here are 8 tips to help you start your day right:

Be grateful that you are alive to see a new day. The moment you open your eyes to a new day, thank God for it. As you get out of bed and set your feet on the floor, be grateful. As you move around and start your day, be thankful for the opportunity of a new day. Continue to be grateful as the day progresses. Remember not everyone who went to bed the same as you last night, made it through the night.

Be Still. Seek spiritual guidance for the day ahead. Before you switch on your phone, or before you connect to the world, first connect with your creator. Spend time alone with God, a few minutes immediately you wake up is all that’s needed for meditating, and praying. Figure out what works for you and consistently practice it; for me it’s 15 minutes of meditation, affirmations and prayers (MAP) every morning.

Be Happy. Choose to be happy. Being grateful and expressing gratitude for where you are now and what you have will help to lift you; and create happiness. Choose to be happy and stay happy, regardless of what happened the day before and despite what you think you could face today and tomorrow.

Be Loving. One of the best things you could do to yourself to start on the right path for the day is to love yourself. Smile at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you love you and mean it. If you don’t love yourself, you are unlikely to love or appreciate anything you do and that sets the scene for negativity and negative outcomes.

Be Kind. Show kindness and compassion to the people around you and others that come your way, starting with your family at home. Say good morning genuinely, show love, appreciate them, and speak words that will uplift them.

Be Present. Avoid starting your day with worry and anxiety. Learn to be in the moment, in the now, in the present time and enjoy the now. Be aware of the moment you are in now and enjoy it.

Be Prepared. Don’t think or worry about how your day will go, rather prepare and plan for the way you want your day to go. Write your daily goals or to do list, write down what activities or your action plan to fulfil your goals. If you had already prepared your plan the night before, then use the time to review your plan/ list. Develop a morning routine that works for you and remember to include fitness/workout regime/ movement, and a healthy breakfast.

Be Expectant. If you expect to have a good day, and expect to have a great day, that’s what you are most likely to get. Your day is meant to be fulfilling and rewarding, so expect it to be so. If you had a less favourable day yesterday, make changes from the lessons learnt and believe for a better today.

Each new day is a gift and it always serves as an opportunity for a new beginning. It presents a clean slate to start afresh and correct the wrongs of yesterday. It’s very easy however, to keep doing the same things day in day out that prevent new change or improvement. Starting the day right by adopting these tips will ensure you get much more out of the day as it progresses and will enable you to end the day feeling fulfilled.
